Full Description

Golden Assam is the finest Assam we have encountered, delivering the malty sweetness and full-bodied character that make this region’s black teas so highly prized. Sourced from the Khongea Estate on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, it produces a robust and satisfying cup that stands out for both strength and balance. This tea has become a firm favourite at Waterloo Tea for its depth and versatility.

Harvested during the second flush, the leaves include a generous proportion of golden tips, reflecting careful plucking and precise production. The presence of these tips marks the tea as a high-grade lot and contributes to the distinctive richness and layered character in the cup. Its natural malty profile makes it ideal for traditional breakfast brewing and equally suitable for those who enjoy it with a splash of milk.

Golden Assam also works beautifully as a base for masala chai, where its robust body and flavour hold up to spices and milk. With every infusion, the tea showcases the quality and potential of Assam’s Second Flush harvests, offering a cup that is powerful, satisfying, and consistently enjoyable.

Origin

Golden Assam is sourced from the Khongea Estate, located in the upper reaches of Assam on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River. Assam, in northeast India, is one of the most famous tea-producing regions in the world. It is known for its bold, malty black teas that form the backbone of many breakfast blends.

The estate benefits from fertile soils, heavy monsoon rains, and a humid subtropical climate, all of which encourage the growth of strong, full-bodied leaves. Careful plucking at Khongea focuses on selecting the youngest shoots and fine golden tips, which distinguish higher-grade Assams and reflect skilled cultivation and attention to quality.

Processing

Golden Assam is a fully oxidised black tea, produced using orthodox methods. After plucking, the leaves are withered to reduce moisture and rolled to break cell walls, releasing the natural enzymes that drive oxidation. This step is critical for developing the distinctive malty flavour and deep amber colour that Assam teas are known for.

The leaves are allowed to undergo full oxidation under closely monitored conditions, after which they are fired to stabilise and preserve their structure. The finished product is graded TGFOPCL (Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe Clonal), indicating well-formed leaves, careful sorting, and a high proportion of golden tips. This processing results in a tea that is rich, malty, and full-bodied, with enough strength to take milk and enough depth to enjoy on its own.
