Full Description

Waterloo Breakfast is our premium take on a classic breakfast tea. Sourced from the Khongea Estate in Assam, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, it comes from a region celebrated for producing some of the world’s boldest and most distinctive black teas. Unlike many breakfast teas, Waterloo Breakfast is single origin and single harvest, ensuring a consistent cup with a clear sense of place.

This tea is processed into a broken leaf format, an unusual choice for leaves of this quality. The smaller particle size allows for a faster infusion and a stronger brew, while still retaining the malty depth and layered character that define Assam teas. The result is a breakfast tea with power and refinement in equal measure.

Harvested during the 2024 Second Flush, this clonal Assam includes a generous proportion of golden tips - the young buds of the tea plant. Their presence reflects careful plucking and skilled production, marking this as a premium lot.

Waterloo Breakfast adapts to your taste. It is full-bodied and complex enough to enjoy black, yet bold enough to carry milk with ease. Its depth also lends itself to masala chai, making it as versatile as it is distinctive. For those seeking more from their morning tea, Waterloo Breakfast delivers strength, character, and a clear connection to origin. Available as loose leaf or in high-quality tea bags.

Origin

Assam, in northeast India, is one of the most famous tea-producing regions in the world. Situated along the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra River, the area benefits from rich alluvial soil, heavy rainfall, and a humid subtropical climate. These conditions combine to produce teas with a bold, malty character that has become synonymous with the name “Assam.”

The Khongea estate, located on the river’s south bank, is known for its particularly robust and flavourful teas. Gardens here have been cultivating tea for generations, and their reputation for quality stems from careful field management, selective harvesting, and expertise in processing. Unlike blended breakfast teas that draw from multiple sources, Waterloo Breakfast comes from a single farm, ensuring both traceability and a unique sense of place.

Processing

Assam teas are fully oxidised black teas. After harvest, the leaves are withered to reduce moisture, then rolled to break down the cell structure and initiate oxidation. This process darkens the leaves, intensifies their flavour, and develops the malty richness characteristic of Assam. Once oxidation is complete, the leaves are fired to halt the process and lock in flavour.

What makes Waterloo Breakfast unusual is the grade: GFBOPCL (Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe Clonal). While high-grade Assams are typically produced as whole leaf teas, this lot was produced in a broken leaf style. The smaller leaf particles infuse more quickly, creating a stronger, fuller-bodied liquor in less time. At the same time, the presence of golden tips - the young buds of the tea plant - ensures sweetness and complexity.

This combination of premium leaf quality and broken style results in a tea that is bold and malty, yet still nuanced and layered. It is particularly well suited to breakfast drinking, whether enjoyed black, with milk, or as the base for masala chai.
