Description

Decaf Breakfast Tea offers the full-bodied character of a traditional English Breakfast while significantly reducing caffeine content. Using a natural CO₂ decaffeination process, caffeine is lowered to 0.2% without compromising the tea’s structural integrity or flavour, preserving the familiar depth, body, and warmth of a classic breakfast brew.

This tea works beautifully on its own or with milk, making it a versatile choice for mornings, afternoons, or anytime you want the comfort of a full-bodied black tea without the stimulant effect. Its balanced profile allows it to be brewed strong or gentle, offering flexibility for different palates and preferences.

Beyond flavour, Decaf Breakfast Tea provides an option for those moderating caffeine intake while still enjoying the ritual and satisfaction of a traditional breakfast tea.

Origin

This tea comes from the low-grown regions of southern Sri Lanka, an area known for producing black teas with consistent body and approachable strength. The plantations are situated at elevations up to 600 meters, in Ransegoda, approximately 180km from Colombo.

Ransegoda’s location in the Matara district provides conditions well-suited to black tea production, with reliable rainfall patterns and stable temperatures that support steady leaf growth throughout the year. Low-grown teas from this area are prized for their ability to produce a full-bodied infusion while remaining smooth and balanced, making them a dependable choice for traditional breakfast teas.

The combination of elevation, regional climate, and careful cultivation contributes to the distinctive character of Decaf Breakfast Tea. Understanding the origin helps illustrate why this region has long been a core area for black tea production in Sri Lanka and why its teas are widely used in both single-origin and blended offerings.

Processing

Decaf Breakfast Tea begins as a low-grown Sri Lankan black tea, harvested and withered to achieve the desired moisture content and leaf quality. Once the initial preparation is complete, the tea undergoes a natural decaffeination process using supercritical CO₂ extraction.

During this process, the tea is placed in extraction vessels where high-pressure CO₂ passes through the leaves. This selectively removes the majority of caffeine while leaving the structural components and flavour compounds largely intact. The process also captures non-condensable volatile compounds, helping to preserve the familiar aroma and taste of the tea.

After decaffeination, the tea is gently dried to restore optimal moisture levels before packaging. This careful handling ensures that Decaf Breakfast Tea retains the depth, body, and warming qualities expected of a classic English Breakfast, providing a full-flavoured experience without the caffeine.
