Full Description

Yunnan is a black tea from the famed tea-growing province of Yunnan in southwest China. Known as the birthplace of tea cultivation, Yunnan produces black teas with a richness that makes them particularly well-suited to the breakfast cup, delivering satisfying strength without the heaviness often found in other robust teas.

The large, twisted leaves of this tea produce a liquor with chocolatey undertones, gentle sweetness, and a rounded finish. While it shares the body and presence of classic breakfast teas such as Assam and Ceylon, Yunnan brings its own character: softer, more nuanced, and with a natural balance that makes it versatile in the cup.

Best enjoyed black, Yunnan reveals its layered character and clean finish. Although, if it’s brewed a little stronger, it has the depth to take milk, making it an adaptable choice for different preferences and times of day.

Origin

This tea comes from Yunnan Province, a region in southwest China regarded as one of the world’s most historic tea-growing areas. With a landscape of high mountains, fertile soils, and a humid subtropical climate, Yunnan provides ideal conditions for cultivating tea. The province is also home to many ancient tea trees and diverse cultivars, which contribute to the distinctive qualities of its black teas.

Yunnan black teas are known for their golden tips, rich body, and characteristic notes of malt, cocoa, and subtle sweetness. These traits make them unique among Chinese black teas and highly regarded by tea drinkers worldwide.

Processing

Yunnan is a fully oxidised black tea. After careful plucking, the leaves are withered to reduce moisture, then rolled to break down the leaf structure and initiate oxidation. Oxidation is closely controlled to develop the tea’s signature chocolatey body and smooth character, without producing excessive astringency.

The large, twisted leaf style is typical of Yunnan teas, designed to preserve the integrity of the leaf and retain aromatic complexity. Once oxidation is complete, the leaves are fired to halt the process and stabilise the tea. The result is a black tea that combines strength with natural sweetness, offering a rounded, versatile cup suitable for breakfast or all-day drinking.
