Full Description

Russian Caravan is a blend that brings together tradition, story, and flavour. It pairs smoked Lapsang Souchong tea from Fujian province in China with a rich, full-bodied Assam from India. The result is a layered cup where wood smoke sits alongside malt and subtle sweetness, delivering depth without overpowering the palate.

The name reflects the trade routes that once carried tea from China into Russia and beyond. As caravans stopped along their journeys, fires were lit at camp, and the tea stored nearby would absorb the aroma of the smoke. Over time, this smoky style became associated with the teas that travelled westward. Russian Caravan continues that tradition, offering a taste linked to both history and place.

Expect a distinctive cup with classic smoke character complemented by the warmth and structure of Assam. Smooth, robust, and versatile, it is a tea well suited to colder days or whenever a bold but balanced brew is called for.

Ingredients

The foundation of Russian Caravan is Lapsang Souchong from Fujian province, China, one of the most distinctive and recognisable teas in the world. Its character comes from a traditional smoking process in which the oxidised leaves are slowly dried over pinewood fires. This imparts the unmistakable aroma of wood smoke, creating a flavour that is bold, savoury, and warming. Lapsang Souchong has long been prized for this profile, which sets it apart from other black teas and makes it instantly memorable.

To balance the intensity of the Lapsang, we use a malty black tea from Assam, India. Assam is the one of the largest tea-growing regions in the world and is celebrated for producing strong, full-bodied teas with a natural sweetness and biscuity depth. Its robust liquor provides structure to the blend, ensuring the smoky notes are supported by richness rather than overwhelming the palate. The Assam adds weight and smoothness, creating a cup that feels rounded and satisfying.

The interplay between the pine smoke of Fujian and the malt of Assam is what defines Russian Caravan. On its own, Lapsang can be too dominant for some drinkers, but when paired with Assam, its character becomes more accessible. The smoke weaves through the maltiness, adding layers of flavour rather than masking them. The result is a blend that captures the appeal of smoked tea while offering a smoother, more balanced experience.

This blend carries the history that gives Russian Caravan its name. Teas were once transported along the great trade routes from China into Russia, a journey that could take many months. Caravans lit fires at night as they camped, and the teas often absorbed the smoke from these fires, creating the distinctive flavour that became associated with the style. By combining teas from two renowned regions - Fujian and Assam - this version pays tribute to that heritage while offering a cup that feels both traditional and approachable.
