Full Description

Earl Grey is one of the world’s most recognised flavoured teas, traditionally made by blending black tea with the oil of bergamot, a citrus fruit native to southern Italy. Its name comes from association with Charles Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s, although its specific story is unclear. What we do know is that Earl Grey has become synonymous with refinement and elegance in tea drinking. Its bright, citrus aroma combined with a black tea base has made it a favourite worldwide, enjoyed both on its own and with milk.

Our Earl Grey builds on this classic tradition by using high-quality, current-season Ceylon black tea as a base. We chose to use a Ceylon tea as a base as it delivers naturally occurring citric notes to the brew, which complement the bergamot oil to produce a balanced and aromatic cup. Selecting high-grade leaves from medium to high elevation estates ensures that the tea provides consistent body, liquor colour, and mouthfeel, creating a blend that exemplifies the characteristics expected from a premium Earl Grey and differentiating it from mass-market alternatives.

Available as loose leaf or in high-quality tea bags, this Earl Grey adapts to your preferred brewing method. Whether you enjoy a traditional pot at home or prefer the ease of a tea bag in a mug, it delivers the classic Earl Grey experience every time.

Ingredients

Earl Grey is a simple blend of only two ingredients: black tea and bergamot oil.

The black tea we have chosen is a current-season Ceylon from Sri Lanka. The terroir here contributes to the tea’s natural citrus undertones, which complement the signature bergamot flavour. Using high-grade leaves from medium and high elevation gardens ensures body, structure, and consistent liquor in every infusion.

The bergamot oil is obtained from the peel of the bergamot orange, a small citrus fruit primarily cultivated in Calabria, Italy. The fruit itself is roughly the size of an orange but with a thinner, slightly rougher skin. Its essential oil, extracted from the peel through cold pressing, has a distinctive aromatic and flavour profile that is floral, zesty, and subtly bitter. Bergamot thrives in a Mediterranean climate, where abundant sunshine and well-drained soil contribute to the development of its essential oils.

The interplay between the Ceylon black tea and bergamot oil defines the classic Earl Grey character. The result is a blend that is fragrant and balanced, highlighting both the natural qualities of the tea and the distinctive aroma of the bergamot.
