Full Description

Waterloo Chai is our interpretation of a classic Masala Chai, built around a robust Assam black tea base. The tea is combined with traditional warming spices to create a full-bodied cup with a distinct spicy character.

The use of whole spices rather than powders allows the flavours to infuse gradually, giving the tea depth and complexity without overwhelming the Assam base. Cassia bark, cardamom pods, star anise, black peppercorns, and cloves release their natural oils during brewing, which interact with the malty richness of the tea to produce a balanced, aromatic infusion.

This blend is ideal for traditional stovetop preparation. Brew with water and milk, adding sweetener if desired, to produce a golden, spiced cup that embodies the essence of a traditional chai.

Waterloo Chai delivers an authentic chai experience at home, highlighting the character of Assam tea and the warming qualities of classic spices. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys a spiced, full-bodied tea true to tradition.

Ingredients

The base of Waterloo Chai is a high-quality Assam tea, prized for its malty character and briskness. This single-origin tea provides the structural backbone of the blend, allowing the spices to shine while maintaining clarity and body in the cup. Its natural strength ensures the chai holds up well when brewed with milk, a key element of traditional preparation.

The spice blend brings together classic chai ingredients in a way that’s layered rather than loud. Cassia bark and cloves lend warmth and aromatic sweetness, while cardamom lifts the cup with its rounded, fragrant spice. Star anise adds a gentle note of sweetness that smooths the blend, and the black pepper provides subtle heat that enhances rather than overpowers. Each ingredient builds on the next as the oils from the spices gradually infuse into the Assam base to create a balanced infusion where no single note dominates.

This harmony of tea and spice reflects the essence of traditional Masala Chai: bold, comforting, and naturally complex.

Brewing the Perfect Cup

  1. Add water and the chai tea (1.5g per 100ml water) to a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Add milk and simmer until golden brown.
  4. Sweeten to taste - we recommend either sugar, honey or maple syrup.
