Tea Brewers Cup - Entry and Regulations

Tea Brewers Cup

21/22 March, Old Library, Hayes, Cardiff

Below are the rules and regulations for the inaugural Tea Brewers Cup. The purpose of this competition is to further advance methods of engagement with the public as well as driving innovation in this sector. The hope is that finalists will deliver presentations that are relevant to the issues that face the tea industry today.

Entry

The competition is open to all those who work in the retail/café/hotel sector. Those who work in coffee are encouraged to enter as the format of the competition is based loosely on the Brewers' cup.

Although preference will be given to those who work in the industry we are also keen to involve the public and a number of slots will be put aside for those working in other industries.

No more than two applications are allowed from one parent organisation.

Although titled the UK Brewers Cup, entrants from Europe and further afield will also be accepted.

Successful applicants will be notified as soon as all entries are processed.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Friday February 6th.

Heats

These will be judged blind, with contestants each given a number at the start of the day.

Entrants will be supplied with 3 teas at the start of their slot.

They will have 30 minutes in which to brew the teas to the best of their ability.

There must be at least 200ml of each tea brewed and ready for judging.

Each tea should be served in a single vessel.

The teas can be sent to the judges one by one or all at the same time during the 30 minutes.

There will be no visual or audio contact between the contestants and judges during the heats.

Entrants are allowed to bring brewing vessels, cup, jugs, thermometers and other tea ware. They will also be allowed to bring water and kettles.

The venue will provide a water boiler from where 93-97 degrees Celsius water can be drawn. There will also be minimal tea ware available, but these should not be relied upon as part of an entrant’s routines.

The top six contestants will progress to the final on Sunday 22 March

Finals

Finalists will have 15 minutes in which to brew and present any two teas of their choosing. They will also be permitted to brew further teas which can be used as comparative brews. These additional teas will not be scored in the same way as the two core teas will be, but instead form part of the overall routine.

Exceptional entrants will show a clear grasp of the rationale of their routine.

Judges' decisions are final.

Prizes

1st - £500

2nd - £250

3rd - £100
